Hiking in the gorge of Vouraikos on 28/10
Activity Description
Vouraikos is one of the most beautiful gorges in Greece and one of the best hiking routes where one can enjoy the changing landscapes, the rich vegetation and images from the historical Odontotos.
The gorge owes its name to Voura, the daughter of Elikis and Iona whom Heracles loved, and for whom, according to legend, he opened the gorge so that he could pass through to reach the sea and meet her. In ancient times the river was called Erasinos along almost its entire length, i.e. as far as it was within the territory of the Arcadian city of Cynaitha, only in the part that crossed the area of the ancient city of Vouras and reached the sea, i.e. the lower course in the area of Aegialia, was called Vouraikos.
Vouraikos Gorge is about 20 kilometers long. The river crosses the gorge surrounded by dense vegetation, steep rocks, waterfalls and caves. The cog railway Diakoptos - Kalavrytons also passes through the gorge, which is a work of the period of Charilaos Trikoupis and was inaugurated on March 10, 1896 during the government of Theodoros Diligiannis.
Walking on the train tracks at some points, you see left and right, at every turn of the line, uncontrollable scary waterfalls, special arcades, abandoned stone houses with telegraphs that take us back in time, rocks sculpted by rushing waters and awesome aerial bridges !
